OUR HISTORY
1919
On 14 October 1919, Giovanni Silvestrini and other leading oil and wine entrepreneurs from Lucca, founded a new company; S.A.L.O.V. Società Anonima Lucchese Olio e Vino.
1920
In the early 1920s, Salov opened the first modern production plant in Viareggio with a patented system for refining Olive Oil.
1930
In the 1930s the company established itself nationally and internationally, especially in the US market.
1940
From the 1940s the plant was gradually expanded, acquiring the surrounding farmland, and building new processing facilities.
1944 - 1950
During World War II, the refinery and other Salov sites suffered considerable damage. However, thanks to the skill and dedication of its employees, the company was able to rebuild its market standing and in the 1950s it became a recognised leader of the oil industry.
1959
The economic boom changed consumer habits, with consumers paying more and more attention to brands and aesthetically packaged products. Recognising this market trend, the Sagra brand was born. This was a high-quality oil sold in pharmacies, produced by Salov on behalf of Società Farmaceutica Carlo Erba.
1975
Salov took over the Sagra brand, developed its national distribution and marketed it independently.
Filippo Berio’s expansion abroad continued, especially in the Americas.
1987 - 1999
In 1987, with growing international demand, Salov North America (now Filippo Berio USA) was founded in New Jersey (USA), the group’s first foreign subsidiary followed, in 1999, by the Filippo Berio UK subsidiary in London.
By opening these international offices, the brand gained popularity and increased distribution.
2004 - 2005
Salov moved to Massarosa, staying in the province of Lucca where Filippo Berio founded the company in 1867. The new plant, one of the most modern and technologically advanced in Europe, has sophisticated equipment that ensures high production standards and precise quality control. The location of the production plant, on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, makes it unique.
2011 - 2015
In 2011, as confirmation of Salov’s international expansion and role as an ‘ambassador’ for worldwide Olive Oil culture, the company opened an office in Singapore. In 2015 the company became part of the Bright Food Group.
2017
A new subsidiary was founded in Russia.
2019
On the occasion of Salov’s 100th anniversary, Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil was officially launched in Italy with an exclusive, high-quality range, dedicated to our country and produced using the ‘Berio Method’.
