Filippo Berio at the Conference on the Future of Lake Massaciuccoli: A Concrete Commitment to the Local Territory
Salov S.p.A., owner of the Filippo Berio brand, takes part in the event organized by Oasi Lipu and the Regional Park Authority, sharing its experience in environmental protection and the enhancement of local natural heritage
Massarosa, 7 November 2025 – Salov S.p.A., an industrial group among the world’s leading players in the olive oil sector, is participating in and supporting the conference “From the Lake Contract to the Nature Restoration Law: Past, Present and Future of Lake Massaciuccoli”, held today, Friday 7 November, at La Brilla in Massaciuccoli (Lucca).
The event, organized by the Lipu Oasi of Massaciuccoli and the Regional Park Authority to celebrate the Oasi’s 40th anniversary, brought together local authorities, institutions and citizens to review the governance of the lake and outline a roadmap for the future of the area, in light of the European Nature Restoration Law and environmental evolution models for the next 50 years.
Salov took part in the opening remarks alongside the Regional Park Authority, the Reclamation Consortium, and the Mayors of Massarosa and Vecchiano. Representing the company was Gioia Giacobazzi, Corporate Marketing and Sustainability Coordinator, who highlighted the company’s deep bond with Lake Massaciuccoli and the many environmental initiatives carried out over the years to protect the area.
Salov’s connection with this territory is rooted in its history: not far from here, in Lucca, Filippo Berio started his activity more than 150 years ago. In 2004, the company further strengthened this connection by moving to its modern Massarosa plant—one of the most technologically advanced facilities in Europe, covering an area of 330,000 m².
From the very beginning, Salov implemented significant environmental redevelopment actions in the areas surrounding the plant, including the lake’s shores. The banks were cleaned and upgraded with the creation of walkways and paths that allow employees to enjoy nature during their breaks, reinforcing their daily bond with this precious ecosystem.
Biomonitoring and Biodiversity Protection
Since 2008, Salov has used bee biomonitoring to assess air quality and the state of the surrounding environment. Two monitoring stations (one at the Massarosa plant and one control station in Rigoli) confirmed, once again in 2023–2024, the good health of the colonies and the local ecosystem.
Special attention is dedicated to the quality of the waters of Lake Massaciuccoli. Analyses using the Extended Biotic Index (IBE) assigned the waters a stable score of 8 on a scale of 1 to 10, indicating an environment with low signs of pollution. Chemical-physical analyses conducted in 2024 showed improvements in microbiological parameters, confirming that the plant’s activities do not generate significant environmental impacts and help maintain a satisfactory ecological balance in the surrounding area.
Salov’s Heronry: A Natural Heritage Treasure
In 2022, thanks to a report from an employee, an active heronry—a breeding colony of herons—was identified within the Salov property in Montramito. A study conducted by Lipu between April 2023 and January 2024 confirmed the presence of a mixed colony composed mainly of grey herons and cormorants, with 25 nests recorded.
The heronry is now the main breeding site for grey herons in the Lake Massaciuccoli area and the first documented case of cormorant nesting in the region. According to Lipu’s official report, Salov’s current management of the area is fully compatible with biodiversity conservation.
A Tribute to Puccini and the Local Territory
During the conference, Salov will actively contribute by providing its Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil for the lunch service. To further emphasize its connection to the area—not only from an environmental perspective but also a cultural one—the company will offer speakers a special gift: the “Tosca” extra virgin olive oil tin, part of the Opera Collection, an exclusive limited-edition series inspired by the works of Giacomo Puccini, the composer from Lucca who wrote his masterpieces right on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, just steps away from where Filippo Berio began his craft.
